When disaster strikes, many people want to help but do not know how. We direct those efforts by taking up collections, providing logistics, and coordinating with local groups in affected areas.
We coordinate volunteer labor, equipment, and resources to get them to the people that need them most.
We support local first responders as well as victims of the disaster with direct aid, both financial and material. We also solicit volunteers, equipment, and supplies to start the healing process.
The year 2020 will live in our collective memory for decades to come. This was, after all, the year the COVID pandemic struck. But it was also the most active hurricane season on record with 30 named storms over a span of just a few months. Several of these storms ended up striking the Gulf Coast and causing untold damage to lives and property.
In Houston, we had flashbacks to Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Houston was completely submerged with millions of people affected and billions in damage. Resources and volunteers poured in from around the country, especially our neighbors along the Gulf Coast. One group many Houstonians remembered was the Cajun Navy.
Hence, as we watched the area between Beaumont and Lake Charles get hit by Hurricane Laura, a massive Category 4 hurricane and the largest to every strike Louisiana, our hearts broke. We felt helpless yet we wanted to help.
A group of friends had the idea that they could indeed find ways to help. They rallied what resources they could then drove to Lake Charles. With them went chainsaws, tractors, fuel, ice, food, donations, and anything else they could fit. They jokingly called themselves the Texas Cavalry. Once there, they were awestruck with the destruction that had been wrought upon the area.
They were able to coordinate with local first responders and started helping to clear streets and homes for those in need. The trip was such a success that subsequent trips were planned, all volunteer and all donated. Finally it was decided to formalize the group and make it a standing non-profit service organization.
To date the Texas Cavalry Disaster Response Team has helped coordinate the delivery of over 50,000lbs of food, 1,000 gallons of milk, thousands of pounds of donated supplies, over 100 generators, hundreds of gallons of fuel, and uncountable manhours of volunteer labor.
We are always preparing for our next emergency, and we appreciate anything you can offer. We are all called to donate our time, our talent, and our treasure. How will you answer the call?
We are all busy, and our business can become a convenient excuse for why we do not do more. Maybe you are a single mom fighting to make ends meet. Maybe you run a business, or have young children, or already volunteer with other groups. You can still help!
Join our mailing list. When the time comes, make a donation. Or maybe you can help act as a donation drop site, or provide logistics support. Even if you just make a small donation, you are helping.
"To whom much is given, much is expected." Please, answer the call.
